5 Ways to Help Ukraine and Those Affected

The situation in Ukraine has shocked us all and prompted many of us to take action to help those in need. Here’s some inspiration on how you can support both the people around you and those overseas through these challenging times.

  1. Make time to talk

The news is scary for everyone right now. Even more so for those with family living in (and around) Ukraine or serving in the armed forces.

Making time to talk can make a big difference. Why not set up a weekly ‘coffee and chat’ – virtually or in person? You could also reach out to Mental Health First Aiders in your workplace, or get in touch with a friend. As they say, a problem shared is a problem halved.

  1. Attend a fundraising event (or even organise one)

You don’t have to look too far right now to find fundraising events going on in support of Ukraine. If you feel you want to do your bit, why not sign up to a few?

Whether you want to go to a virtual training event, do a charity run, or pick up some snacks at a bake sale, there seems to be something for everyone right now. Of course, if you have a brilliant idea, you can also set up your own event too.

  1. Make a donation to those in need

Making a cash donation – however small – can help provide food and shelter to those in need.

As you may already be aware, The Conveyancing Foundation are currently running their Ukrainian Charity Lotto Appeal – with individual donation and company sponsorship opportunities available – to help raise funds for the DEC Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal. Click here to find out more.

There are also numerous other charities currently responding to the situation in Ukraine – including:

Disasters Emergency Committee Ukraine Appeal

The British Red Cross

The UNHCR refugee agency

Unicef

Save the Children

You can also drop off physical items – including clothing – at donation centres. Check in your local area to see if there are any churches or community centres getting involved. You could even organise a charity drive at work to collect more items, if you like.

  1. Add a splash of yellow and blue

Have you added yellow and blue anywhere yet?

Many people are showing their solidarity with the people of Ukraine by flying flags, changing their social media profiles or (if able) making changes to their corporate websites and social media too.

It may only be a small gesture, but collectively it makes a stand.

  1. Don’t forget about the little things

There are lots of little things you can do to help too. PayPal, shops and even certain cash points offer the option of adding a small (often £1) donation onto your purchases at the checkout.

Some apps – such as YuLife, which allow you to collect coins against your activity – also allow you to trade them in for good causes instead of gift vouchers or rewards. If and when you get the opportunity, opting into such initiatives to help Ukraine can also make a difference.
